Although parish councillors will generally attend the annual parish meeting, there is no legal obligation to do so. However, if the Chair of the Council does attend, then they MUST preside at the meeting.

The Chair of a parish council may convene a parish meeting (para 15(1)(a), Schedule 12, Local Government Act 1972).
