What this training covers
The training is made up of two sessions and both must be completed. Session 1 explains what a council does, legislation, roles and responsibilities, teamwork and standards and Code of Conduct. Session 2 moves onto the practicalities of how things work including meetings and agendas, financial management and transparency and community involvement.
How is it delivered and how long does it last?
Our standard group offer is online, using the Zoom video conferencing platform. We limit the number of delegates at each workshop in order to ensure everyone has the opportunity to engage with the trainer. The workshops last approximately 2 hours.
Who is it suitable for
These two workshops are designed for both new and existing councillors.
How will the council benefit
A local councillor has a number of duties, roles and responsibilities and opportunities to make a difference. When someone joins a new organisation it is usual to have a form of induction and training to ensure there is a good understanding of how things work in practice. In turn this enables you to get involved and contribute to the effectiveness of your council and deliver successful outcomes for your community.
Cost
Each workshop costs £ making the total cost £ plus VAT. Once booked we will issue our invoice. See our terms under our how membership works page.
Cancellation
If it is necessary to cancel training please get in touch with us as soon as possible. Our cancellation policy is two week's notice - full refund. One week's notice - opportunity to re-schedule, less than one week's notice - no refund. See our terms under our how membership works page.
Trainer
We commission local trainers on a sub-contract basis with significant experience as a working officer in Suffolk, they are:
Colin Poole, Town Clerk, Haverhill Town Council and a SALC internal auditor.
Lesley Beevor, Town Clerk, Southwold Town Council and
Wendy Alcock
Support materials
Our trainers use some PowerPoint slides as a visual aid, adapting the sessions to suit the needs of delegates. On registration delegates will be set up on the SALC member portal so they can access online resources - The Model Council - containing articles produced by the SALC team. In a separate email delegates will also receive details of our councillor training room and access to the e-training pack with links to notes to support the workshops.
